Privacy Policy

The Short Version
Suburban Legend has no account, no sign-up and no server of its own. Your walks and progress are stored on your iPhone and are not sent to us.
The app does talk to two kinds of third-party map service to draw and name the streets around you. The rest of this policy explains exactly what is sent to them and why.
Who We Are
Suburban Legend is made by Madhouse Development ("we", "our", "us"). This policy covers the Suburban Legend iPhone app and this website.
Information Stored on Your Device
To do its job the app keeps the following on your iPhone, in its own storage:
- Street data for the areas you have loaded, downloaded from OpenStreetMap.
- Which streets you have walked, and the suburb boundaries used to work out your percentage.
- Walk sessions: the start and end time, distance, the streets newly walked, and the last accepted location of each walk.
This information never leaves your device unless you choose to back up your phone, in which case it is included in your iCloud or computer backup under Apple's terms. Deleting the app deletes it.
Location
The app asks for permission to use your location while you are using it. Location is used:
- To centre the map on you when the app opens.
- During a Legendary Walk only, to work out which streets you pass along. The app continues to receive location updates while a walk is in progress even if your phone is locked, so you do not need to keep the screen on. It stops as soon as you finish the walk.
Your location fixes are processed on your device and are not uploaded anywhere. You can withdraw location permission at any time in Settings; the app will still show the map and your existing progress, but cannot record new walks.
Third-Party Map Services
To draw streets and name your suburb, the app sends map coordinates (not your identity) to these services. Like any internet request, they also see your IP address.
- OpenStreetMap Overpass API: when streets are loaded, the app sends the rectangle of map area to fetch. This may be the area around your location or around wherever you have panned the map. Requests go to the public Overpass server run by the OpenStreetMap community (overpass-api.de) and, if it is busy, to public mirrors operated by kumi.systems, Mail.ru and private.coffee. Each is run by a third party under its own privacy policy.
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim: to find out which suburb is at the centre of the map, the app sends that single point to the OpenStreetMap Foundation's Nominatim geocoder (nominatim.openstreetmap.org), which is subject to the OSMF Privacy Policy. Suburb boundaries are cached on your device, so a suburb is looked up once.
- Apple Maps: the base map is provided by Apple's MapKit. Apple's handling of map requests is described in Apple's Maps privacy information.
Requests identify the app by name so that the services can contact us about usage, but they contain no account, device identifier or personal details.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not collect analytics or usage statistics.
- We do not show advertising or use advertising identifiers.
- We do not sell, share or receive your location history. We cannot, because it is not sent to us.
- This website sets no cookies and uses no trackers.
Children
Suburban Legend is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Since the app collects no personal information from anyone, no special handling applies.
Your Choices
- Location: change or revoke access in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
- Delete your data: delete the app. Everything it stored goes with it.
Changes to This Policy
If the app ever gains features that change how data is handled, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change ships.
